Sally Hansen Salon Effects - REVIEW

I would consider myself a nail fanatic of some sort. I do have monthly subscription for nail polish (JULEP) and I ALWAYS make a trip to the nail section of any store to see what new colors or products there are.

Back when Sally Hansen first came out with their Salon Effects polish strips, I was an instant fan and currently have 5 different designs in my nail collection when receiving this new box. You could guess the grin on my face when I unboxed my Spring Beauty vox box and found a box of Salon Effects with one of my favorite designs from this line.

The test -

Having had used 5 different designs from this line in the past, I can safely say that I know this product well. The other day I was getting ready for a much needed girl's day out with my best friends and had \ an hour to get ready. Most of the time, finding time to paint (plus drying) my nails while caring for an infant and an active 2 year old can be near impossible. I love the ease of nail polish strips! Great designs to choose from and zilch on the dry time! I personally add a fast drying top coat (seche vite) to up the staying power (with the wrapping method) plus some extra shine.

Application is fairly simple. When removing contents, I had two packets with different size nail polish strips, a nail file with different textures, an orange stick and application directions. I opened one packet of the nail polish strips and begin to compare which size would fit each nail. On many occasions, I have been able to get away with using one entire packet for both my nails. The consistency is similar to sheet of paper and is very pliable when manuvering onto nail. Trimming the excess is a breeze with a few downward motions with the enclosed file against the edge of each nail. With the length of the strips, I can use the excess polish strip from one fingernail application to fit another fingernail.

[TIP] Be aware that once you've opened the sealed packet you have a small window to use those polish strips before the tackiness to adhere your nails is gone due to the exposure to air. To reduce wasting those lovely nail polish strips, invite your girls over for some 'manicure/pedicure' time and use those extras up! Or you can give them to a friend (or in my case, my mom) and have them use it within the day.

Removal of the nail polish strip from your nails is done by using nail polish remover. With a thicker consistency than a single or double layer of polish, expect that you'll either need to lay nail polish remover with a cotton swab over each nail to 'soften' the polish off your nails.

The claim indicates up to 10 days and in many cases this held to be true with an added personal touch. I apply the nail strips as directed but I will finish off the look by wrapping the nail and applying one coat of quick drying top coat (seche vite) every three days. I don't mind this added step because I can be rough with my nails when I pick and pull with my finger nails and it helps make the nail strips last.

Overall, I love these nail strips! They have so many great designs to choose from and are easy to apply! I love having designs on my digits and it can be annoying to create by hand the same and clean designs for the opposite hand's fingers. These nails strips make it easy to have such great designs without forking over too much money at the nail shop and can make nail art easy for those short on time!

Pro -

  • Accessible at most stores
  • Many designs to choose from including plain solid colors
  • Easy to apply
  • Can use one nail strip to apply on two nails
  • All products you need are included in package
  • No dry time (unless you add a top coat)
  • No worries with having one hand's nails look better than other hand's nails
  • Easy to remove with nail polish remover

Cons -

  • May start to chip off or begin to lift before the 10 days is up (unless you add top coat every 3 days)
  • If you have extra strips, there is a very small window of how long these are good for - can lose its tackiness

In short -

Packaging - In a clear plastic retangular container that holds two packages of nail strips totaling 16, a file with 3 different textures, an orange stick and a pamphlet detailing directions on applying the nail strips. The package holding the nail strips is very well sealed with foil and plastic to keep from air exposure. The nail strips has a paper that is on the bottom of the strip.
Ease of use - Yes. Upon determining which nail strip fits your nail, you peel the bottom part of the nail strip (paper) from the nail decal and place close to your cuticle on the bed of your nail. After which you use the enclosed nail file to trim excess and you are done.
Cost - suggested retail price is $9.99 but I've seen it as low as $8.50.

I feel like that with freehand nail art. One hand is cute and the other hand not so cute. You should try it out! I would live to hear your thoughts.
